The choir was established in 1932

as the

Mitcham Choral Society.

Our Repertoire

We perform Classical – oratorio, part songs, madrigals, sacred Easter and Christmas music, ballads, songs from the shows, etc

Our Musical Director

The esteemed Ian Lowe has been with us since 2009

Ian’s musical experience:

     Ian Lowe began his vocal studies at the Melba Memorial Conservatorium of Music, and sang regularly with the Victorian State Opera.

    Ian has taught singing at the Melba Conservatorium of Music(1996-2008) Camberwell Grammar(1997-present),Xavier College(2000-2007) and Melbourne University Conservatorium(2009-2011).He has adjudicated many singing competitions and eisteddfau in Melbourne and country Victoria.
   Currently he is President of the Lieder Society of Victoria and the Robert Stolz Viennese Music Society, Vice-President of the Kew Community Festival, and conductor of The Melbourne Singers and the Liedertafel Arion.

Joining Requirements

To join our choir there is no audition

You just need to have a (SATB)  voice

The ability to read music and sight read is desirable and it is important to be able to hold a part

Joining fee zero

Annual Subscription of $20.00

We also charge a Weekly Rehearsal fee of $7.00

Rehearsals

The Melbourne Singers rehearse once per week on a Wednesday night

from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m

 Our Rehearsal venue is at Methodist Ladies College (MLC) Kew

207 Barkers Rd, Kew VIC 3101

Off-street parking is available.

Concert Dress

Ladies– Regulation black skirt and top with blue kaftan top – provided at cost.

Gents– Formal dinner suit, white shirt and black bow tie.

Choir Performances

The Melbourne Singers perform an

average of 5 concert performances a year.

We present programmes of various styles of music to many church groups and retirement villages. The Melbourne Singers have more recently presented programmes to residents in Aged Care Centres in the Boroondara district and free concerts for elderly citizens. Unfortunately Covid restrictions limit these performances at present. Hopefully these will resume in the foreseeable future.

Janet Perkins Vocal Scholarship 

The choir offers a scholarship called the

 Janet Perkins Vocal Scholarship to classical singers

 aged between the ages of 17 and 21.

The winning performer on the night receives $1000 towards their tuition fees for the following year.
